Results summary:
- Astatotilapia bloyeti (Sauvage 1883) is senior synonym of A. strigigena (Pfeffer, 1893), A. kilossana (Steindachner, 1915), A. paludinosa Greenwood, 1980 and (provisionally) A. sparsidens(Hilgendorf 1905).
Distribution: Wami River system, (type locality near Kilosa), the Malagarasi, the Pangani and the catchments of Lake Manyara, Lake Eyasi and associated lakes
- Astatotilapia gigliolii (Pfeffer, 1896): junior synonyms include Astatotilapia vollmeringi (Steindachner, 1915) and Astatotilapia tweddlei Jackson, 1985
Distribution: Rufiji, Ruvu and Ruvuma basins, Lakes Chilwa and Chiuta.
- A. calliptera (Günther 1894): junior synonyms include Tilapia (Astatotilapia) swynnertoni Boulenger 1907, Haplochromis centropristoides Nichols and LaMonte 1931, Neochromis simotes nyassae Borodin 1936.
Distribution: Lakes Malawi, Chiuta and Chilwa; Lower Zambezi, Buzi, Pungwe and Save River systems; Ruvuma;
- Astatotilapia burtoni (Günther 1894)
Distribution: endemic to Lake Tanganyika and its catchment.
- Astatotilapia stappersii (Poll 1943) status of different populations perhaps requires further investigation into possible cryptic species.
Distribution: Lake Tanganyika and affluent rivers
- Astatotilapia fuelleborni (Hilgendorf & Pappenheim 1903): A valid species, but the status of different populations perhaps requires further investigation into possible cryptic species.
Distribution: Lake Rukwa catchment.
- Astatotilapia katavi (Seegers 1996): Possibly a valid species or perhaps a geographic variant of A. fuelleborni.
Distribution: apparently endemic to the northern part of the Lake Rukwa catchment
- Astatotilapia sp. 'PSEUDOPALUDINOSUS': An undescribed population or species apparently endemic to the northern part of the Lake Rukwa catchment.
- Astatotilapia sp. 'LUPA' An undescribed potentially valid taxon known only from two sites on the Lupa River in the eastern Lake Rukwa catchment.
- Astatotilapia sp. 'CHIPWA' An undescribed species identified from the (southern) Lake Tanganyika catchment.
- Astatotilapia sp. 'RUAHA BLUE' An undescribed species identified from the Great Ruaha River.
- Astatotilapia sp. 'RUAHA RED CHEEK' An undescribed species identified from the Great Ruaha River.

01.03.2021: Vranken, N., Van Steenberge, M., Balagizi, A. & Snoeks, J. (2020): The synonymy of Haplochromis pharyngalis and Haplochromis petronius (Cichlidae). - Journal of Fish Biology, 97 (5): 1554-1559.

Abstract
Haplochromis pharyngalis and Haplochromis petronius, two endemic cichlids from the Lake Edward system (Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo), are very similar in general morphology but have been reported to differ in pharyngeal jaw morphology and distribution. This study analysed 51 morphometrics and various qualitative characteristics of 48 specimens from different localities. The morphological traits of both species strongly overlap, and differences in the pharyngeal jaw morphology correspond to a geographic morphocline. We conclude that all specimens belong to one valid species, H. pharyngalis, and consider H. petronius to be a synonym.

10.02.2021: Hemichromis camerounensis sp. nov., Bitja-Nyom, Agnèse, Pariselle, Bilong-Bilong, Gilles & Snoeks, 2021
From Abstract: The group of large five-spotted Hemichromis species from West Africa and Lower Guinea was revised (...). Samples from Lake Bosumtwi clustered together with others from West Africa (...), raising again the hypothesis of synonymy of H. frempongi with H. fasciatus. Samples from southern Lower Guinea, including the type locality (Gabon) of H. elongatus, constituted a second weakly resolved cluster(...). Populations from northern Lower Guinea (Atlantic coastal basins) and the upper Chad basin in Cameroon formed a third strongly supported clade (99/100/100), which corresponds to a new species, Hemichromis camerounensis sp. nov (...).

(in press): A systematic revision of the five-spotted Hemichromis complex (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) from West Africa and Lower Guinea, with the description of a new species from Cameroon. - Hydrobiologia, Published 22. 20.01.2021: Four new species of Serranochromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from the Cuanza and Okavango river systems in Angola, including a preliminary key for the genus JAY R. JR. STAUFFER, ROGER BILLS, PAUL H. SKELTON

From Abstract: The present study describes Serranochromis alvum n. sp., Serranochromis swartzi n. sp., Serranochromis cuanza n. sp., and Serranochromis cacuchi n. sp. from Angolan tributaries of the Cuanza and Okavango systems in Angola. (....) Serranochromis alvum is known only from the type locality at Cuito-Cuanavale at the junction of the Cuito and Cuanavale rivers, tributary to the Okavango River in Angola. Serranochromis swartzi is known only from the type locality in the Cuanza River, Angola. Serranochromis cuanza is restricted to the Cuanza River, below Capanda Dam, Angola. S. cacuchi is known only from the Cacuchi River, a tributary of the Cuchi-Cubango River in Angola.
