The idea of the dance is ‘lazaruvane’ – a pagan ceremony in terms of regeneration and rebirth of the nature in the spring. on ly in this area (near the Black Sea) the custom is performed by women and men together. The costume for this dance is the oldest model of Bulgarian costumes dating since 500 years ago.
MADCAP In Bulgarian folklore the maiden bunch of flowers has very important symbolic meaning. If a girl gives it to some boy it means that she promises to marry him. In our dance a girl gives her bunch and gives up her maidenhood after wildly dancing.
NORTHERN DANCES It is a joyful and emotional dance, with very typical steps from North-Western part of Bulgaria.
GIRL FEAST IN SHOUPLUKA It is a dance performance from Western Bulgaria – Shoupsko. It is a winter feast of the girls and the dance is based on folk tradition – ‘Dunking of the Rings’, celebrated on Vasiliovden, in which the girls label their bunch to the men and try to predict their future husband.
THRACIAN DANCE Thracians worshiped Dionysus - the god of wine. The wine was an essential element In their rituals and holidays.
SHOPSKI LAZARKI Lazarus day is a Christian holiday that bears the name of St. Lazarus. The name Lazarus is a symbol of health and long life. On this day in Bulgaria the custom Lazaruvane is traditionally followed by young girls called ‘lazarki’. They go around the village houses dancing, singing and do ritual blessings for health, happiness and prosperity. In the past it was believe that the girl who hasn′t taken part in Lazaruvane, couldn′t get married. Therefore, it was necessary every girl from the village to perform this ritual at least on ce in her maidenhood.
KUDI it is a dance from the Southeast part of the country, from the Trace. The background is the winter feast ‘Koleduvane’ /it is a Christmas custom/. During this period young men go from home to home, sing and dance for health, harvest and luck to hosts. If boys don′t come at your home it means that you′re not a good man. So for everyone is a great honor to be visited by these boys and to give them presents – bread and wine.
YOUTH In this dance are included youth jokes and dances from Shopluka – the region arround Sofia. The difficult lifestyle of the shoppes has found a place in their wonderful folklore. Fastest dance in the Balkans is detected in Sofia district. Shoppes have a unique dancing - quickly and with a strange ‘turning up’ makes both female and male dances unique and temp erament.
