Dimidiochromis compressiceps "Masinje"

Dimidiochromis compressiceps is found everywhere in Lake Malawi, mainly above the sandbottom in shallow bays. There they mainly maintain amongst the cane or Vallisneria waiting for young fish trying to hide in these places. There are no geographic variants known of this species except the golden/yellow variant from Chizumulu Island. These examples were found in the neighbourhood of Masinje.

The males of these species can grow to about 22 cm in the lake, females stay smaller. In the aquarium however the males can grow to about 25 cm because of a good feeding, females grow to about 19 cm.

Dimidiochromis compressiceps is a real predator. Young fish belong to his favourite meal. You can best keep this species with multiple females and other big species in a large tank.

We are dealing here with a species which likes eating fish, so we'll regularly have to offer him such kind of food like living small fish, mysis, krill, artemia, shrimpmix and they eat a lot of young fish when we keep them with mbuna.
