Where can you get "out of the ordinary" Pipefish & Seahorses?

Aquatouch had a pair of reidi's in from O.R.A and wanted $150 each for them. They spent several months in the store til they finally sold them. I haven't seen many pipefish in their store. You could call them. They have a different facility that they use to QT all of their fish.

Their WYSIWYG tends to keep "SOLD" items on their for long time just to taunt you. Not only pipefish, I don't believe I've ever seen sygnathids on their site at least in the time being I've checked it.

Wet Pets Hawaii is great to deal with- Les makes sure all livestock are in top condition before shipping, and ships very carefully. I don't know what seahorses he can get, but if that's who you meant by Wet Pets you can't go wrong. I know lots of statisfied customers.

I don't think Ocean Rider (seahorse.com) has half the species they list. Possibly ever. Or maybe they had them once. I've been in the hobby for 10 years, and many have been sold out for that long; or they had the species once a number of years ago and haven't since. I think their bread and butter is and will always be erectus.

As for other sites and listing sold out items, I strongly suspect they keep them up even if they won't be getting them in anytime soon as a business decision. Because fish come and go out of stock at random times, consumers are used to seeing out of stock items (this wouldn't fly in a normal retail site, but fish are specialty.) Additionally, and this is a big one, having seahorse species people might search for will bring traffic to their site; and may lead to someone purchasing something else if the desired seahorse isn't for sale. For instance, if you do a google search for "reidi seahorse" the top two results are liveaquaria and petco, neither of which have them in stock; in fact liveaquaria doesn't even list them under their seahorse category.

I agree w/ FishGrrl -- most on-line fish retailers will keep a listing of every fish it has every had in stock. Its like bragging rights (we were able to get this rare/high profile/hybrid/variation/beautiful fish in) much like some on-line coral dealers have a page of page of their most beautiful cherry picked corals ever, despite the current status of those corals.

For the majority of these species, there is no point in trying to have a retailer get them for you, because way too often, the divers do not know the true identity of what they are catching. If there is a Hawaiian species that you would like, you have been given the name of someone who knows his animals and is willing to get what is requested -- that is extremely rare, however. Few pipefish are correctly identified even when they get to the retailer. Seahorses are constantly mis-identified, apparently sometimes on purpose (I mean, how can you catch a fish on the shores of FL and then mis-identify it as being captive bred?) Then add to this the fact that there are a fair number of species that have been described from "3 specimens that were dredged from 300 ft deep waters and never examined alive" or appear to have a symbiotic relationship with demanding corals, and it becomes clear that putting some of these animals on your wish list is just going to give you heart break.

The good news is that each pipe and horse seems to show so much personality and individuality, esp. for a fish, that you can get a range of experiences from just a few species and not have to worry about what you are missing out on by not owning the species that are unavailable.

I am grateful for what I can have. I enjoy my seahorses and pipes immensely. I just bought my first pair of shrimpfish yesterday and I absolutely love them. They are eating frozen mysid just like the seahorses and pipefish do. They also hunt during the day for pods.

The Mall of America Underwater Adventures aquarium has Haliichthys taeniophorus Ribboned Sea Dragon. They plan to breed them, last I heard. They're not as difficult as other sea dragons, but still need a very large tank.

The Mall of America Underwater Adventures aquarium has Haliichthys taeniophorus Ribboned Sea Dragon. They plan to breed them, last I heard. They're not as difficult as other sea dragons, but still need a very large tank.

Really? I thought they only had leafies. I've been to their seahorse kingdom like twice and never seen them. Are you in MN too?

Seahorsesource.com is the best place for seahorses. I have been to their house and seen the amazing set-up. All of there horses are in top shape and they have a great selection.

FWIW, OR does NOT always breed their own stock, and they don't tell you which species they don't breed. Dan's website (SH Source) clearly states whether the SH he offers were bred at his facility or someplace else.

As for availability, so species take longer to reach market size than others and don't reproduce as readily (such as H. barbouri), so there are times when they aren't available.

Personally, I wouldn't touch any of the SH at most LFS or wholesalers with a 10 foot pole, as you never know where they came from, and they're most likely poor quality net-pen raised specimens (typically touted as "tank-raised"). If nobody can tell me where the SH came from, or the species (even if I know myself) I'd pass.

I saw Histix in an LFS today. They almost came home with me, but they are WC and I have no access to live foods to switch them over.

It was cool to see them.
