Indiana Jones Crystal Skulls

Just thought I would post some shots of the work we did at Stan Winston Studio on The new Indiana Jones Movie.
I designed and digitally sculpted all the Crystal Skulls and Skeletons .
After all the designs were approved we had them rapid prototyped, and our amazing art department brought it all to life.

I have included shots of the practical skulls/skeleton, some Mental Ray crystal renders, the prototyped pieces, and some zbrush renders.

I hope you enjoy

Sorry, I forgot to thank the guys at Pixologic, they gave me a advanced Beta copy of Z3 so I could sit with Spielberg and tweak the designs right in his office.
What an amazing way to work!!!

sounds like REAL fun. I didn’t like the movie but the crystal skulls were really cool. Great job on the design!

I specially like the ribs design, verry cool to see something new ^^
keep up!!

wow cool stuff  love the ribs close enough to normal for you to need to take a second look but different enough to give some serious visual impact.

lol if your not sworn to silents how was ZB3

Awesome! -Must be really satisfying to see your work realized in this way! What a great opportunity too! Did you get to keep one for the mantlepiece?

I want to kill you and steal your job   - I love the prototype… nice deteails!

Respect!

which is this very has foresight view in the building is braves? What were you saying?

????????????????????

As it happens I’ve JUST got back from seeing the movie. Excellent job all round as I’d expect. Although slightly ironic as the media over here have been using it as an example of how 'CGI ’ is dying off in the movies lol. (Must have been a slow news day PMSL.)

Really solid design and sculpting work…and yeah I want your job as well (joke).

Wayne…

Awesome movie! And awesome sculpting! Too bad the crystal skulls in the movie didn’t show all the great detail of the sculpting due to their transparency. They still looked cool, but I like your grey prototype skulls better cuz you can see everything.

Did you also model the actual alien that manifests after the skeletons combine? Amyways, Great job on the design, i enjoyed seeing them in the movie!

Nice work, have not seen the film, but these look great. forms on the underside of the skull are what sell it for me. crystal castings look great, like the fractures.

I love it, I love it! Great schlpt and great 3D print.

Can you talk at all about the 3D printer that was used and the process that was involve to get your digital file to print.

Thanks for sharing - NickZ.

awesomne! love to get some insight on this production:)

really amazing stuff from Stan Winston Studio,Patton, please post more of your work here
Pixologic should do a interview with Stan Winston’s team
5 stars from me

Alex Oliver

I had a funny feeling this was made on Zbrush. The symmetry is what got me thinking this. Love the movie, love the design.

You all need to release a 1:1 replica of this thing through MR or Sideshow. Lots of prop collectors and fan prop makers are going nuts trying to find images of this skull and information on a licensed replica.

Almost Nuked The Fridge, forgot to add rating… 5 stars!

Thanks for the kind words guys,

DDS- I have not seen it either:o

DarthWayne- I use zbrush every day for something that ends up being

prototyped out into the real world, that is the CGI reality:D

KrakenCMT-Thanks
