Fish of the Trachurus (jack mackerels or saurels) genus of the subfamily Caranginae of the Carangidae family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Atlantic horse mackerel or common scad (Trachurus trachurus) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It is a pelagic coastal species. The fish arrange large schools over the sandy bottom. They inhabit the depths of up to 1,050 meters, usually 100-200 meters. The maximum recorded length is 70 cm; specimens up to 30 cm long are more common. The maximum weight is 2 kilograms. It feeds on fish, crustaceans and cephalopods.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
