Black goby (Gobius niger)

Fish of the Gobius genus of the Gobiinae (true gobies) subfamily of the Gobiidae family of the Gobiiformes order of the Percomorpha clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Black goby (Gobius niger) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits at depths of up to 96 meters, usually 1-50 meters. It often occurs near river mouths, in lagoons and coastal waters near a sandy and silty bottom, in thickets of algae. The maximum recorded length is 18 cm. It feeds on crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
