Fish of the Pomatoschistus genus of the Gobiinae (true gobies) subfamily of the Gobiidae family of the Gobiiformes order of the Percomorpha clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) was first described in 1770 by the Prussian and Russian naturalist and traveler Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811).
It inhabits the depth of 4-200 meters. It occurs near a sandy and silty bottom often found in estuaries. The maximum recorded length is 11 cm. It feeds on zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
