Red Californian worm

The RED CALIFORNIAN WORM - was brought in 1959 as a result of selection work in the USA. Unlike the wild relatives who give only 4... 6-fold reproduction, the Californian worm it is capable to give in a year more than 500-fold reproduction, however optimum conditions for this purpose are required.

Preparation of a substratum

Vermikultura begins with preparation of a substratum - a forage for the Californian worms. Requirements to a substratum:
has to be uniform;
should not be chemically aggressive and poisonous;
preparation of a substratum has to be rather fast (of several days in the summer and, at most, about one month in a cold season);
should not "fuse", i.e. contain enough forage for the Californian worms;

Preparation of a substratum indoors: waste (manure, etc.) to spread 20 - 30 cm thick, to close a film, to heat to temperature up to 55 With, to sustain at this temperature days. After days the received weight to pile, finish humidity to 80 C, and to reduce temperature to 30 C.
Further weight is used as a substratum, but in a technological container is filled no more than 5 cm thick.

Adaptation. At the time of adaptation of a livestock of the Californian worm to new waste (transition from a feltwort on svinyak, a dung, etc., use of water from other source), the most part of adult Californian worms can die, without coping with new food. Any kinds and subspecies of worms are subject to it. However whitebaits easily adapt to new food, mature and begin to give posterity - adaptation is finished. Process of adaptation to new waste can take 2 - 4 months. If worms after moving pass to a similar forage, adaptation takes place with the smallest losses.

In a vermikultura, at possible death of adult Californian worms, existence of a large number of a whitebait who upon transition to a new forage does not perish is important, as it is caused by the name: vermikultura and uterine Californian worm.

Check of a substratum testing.
1. After decrease in temperature in a burt, approximately to 40, we start biological testing.
2. With the worm occupied in it we put up to 5 cm of a freshly cooked substratum on a substratum. On the expiration of 1-2 days we check existence of a worm in a prikormochny new substratum. Existence of a worm indicates suitability of a new substratum to processing. Lack of a worm indicates bad preparation in the course of fermentation of a substratum.

The Californian worms can also be used as a forage for various pets (fishes, Amphibia and reptiles, and also for some bird species and rodents).

You should not feed worms with meat!!!!
