Cactus Kalanchoe Tormentosa

It is cultivated as a test plant due to the peculiarity of the appearance of its foliage rather than its small flowers.

This is one of my favorite succulents, and not to say that, one of the hardest to make me live. It is the Kalanchoe Tormentosa, which is popularly known as cat’s ears and can be found in Madagascar. It is slow-growing and if the place it likes it will branch very easily and grow to more than a meter and a half in height.

It’s all a very curious plant, in its entirety is covered by white hairs that give it an appealed appearance, and that appearance is what gives it the common name I told you before. But don’t trust you, because this old-fashioned is actually a spike that if you shove it in, and I speak from my own experience, you won’t get it out of you unless you take a magnifying glass and tweezers.

The leaves are elongated and thick, oval-shaped and somewhat keel-shaped on the reverse. Among its features we will see that the profile is covered with small patches of dark brown, which also match the margins that are also somewhat toothed.

The flowers, I personally have never seen them in any of the specimens I have or anywhere I have gone. Note that they only appear in Kalanchoes that are adult. At the center of the tree, a long, leafless stem ends in an inflorescence with small flowers of salmon or pink. Primarily, the shape of the leaves and the general characteristics of the plant is formed by collecting water, as it is created to be adapted to very dry climates where rainfall is scarce. It must also be said that cold climates are not well supported, which means that they cannot be exposed to temperatures below ten positive degrees. If it is exposed to lower temperatures, you may risk damage, and you will see them with falling leaves.

It’s adapted to growing in semi-arid environments and exposure to full sunshine, so we can have it in the sun at home without any problems, but it also thanks for a little shade especially when temperatures are higher, and so, for not saying so, we avoid some possible misfortune like burning the leaves and you’re left without a plant.

Another thing to consider in order to prevent plant death is irrigation and excess moisture. It must be guarded with the humidity that can be placed on the leaves, the water stagnates in between the hairs and this can cause it to rot and fall. The irrigation must be provided moderately. In winter, only bring water when the plant really needs it, that is when we see the plant starting to roar, and become more abundant during the growing season, waiting that the substrate will be dry between irrigation and irrigation. If you take into account everything I said before, believe me that you will have a plant by time.
