Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp - Caridina Dennerli : Complete Shrimp Profile & Care Guide

Table of contents

Introduction

The Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp (Caridina Dennerli) is a captivating freshwater shrimp species that deserves more recognition. With their peaceful demeanour, small yet striking appearance, and compatibility with many other species, these shrimp have become a sought-after invertebrate in the aquarium trade.

Active around the clock, these shrimp can be found scavenging for food on the substrate, rocks, and plants. They are particularly fond of scraping algae-covered rocks and display fascinating social behaviours. As they are sensitive to bright light, it is important to provide a dimly lit environment for these shrimp to thrive.

Despite being a relatively new addition to the hobby, Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp have quickly gained popularity due to their unique appearance. Their slim, segmented bodies, long antennae, and tiny white legs are similar to other dwarf shrimp species. These shrimp can range in colour from light red to wine-red, adorned with white or blue dots across their body and white maxillipeds. Overall, the Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp is a fascinating and delightful addition to any aquarium, adding both aesthetic appeal and interesting behaviours.

Sexual Dimorphism

It is challenging to discern male Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp from females, as there are no discernible physical differences between the sexes. Unlike other dwarf shrimp, where females are typically larger and more curved than their male counterparts, male and female Sulawesi shrimp have similar physical characteristics. However, female Sulawesi shrimp possess a saddle beneath their upper dorsal, which is not visible to the naked eye due to the shrimp's dark external shell. It is only visible under infrared light.

Natural Habitat

Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp originate from Lake Mantano and are native to the Sulawesi region in Indonesia. You can find these magnificent shrimp in two ancient lakes, Poso and Towuti, where the waters are calm and host the same plants, animals, and water parameters. The Sulawesi region's lakes are a true wonder, with a unique ecosystem that supports an abundance of aquatic life.

Sadly, the Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp is listed as an endangered species, with rising water pollution posing a significant threat to their survival. As the environment continues to change, these remarkable creatures struggle to adapt, making it all the more important to protect and preserve their natural habitat. Recreating the perfect environment for Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp in your home aquarium requires a bit of effort, but the rewards are well worth it.

Breeding

Breeding Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp can be a time-consuming process, as they have a low breeding rate and lay relatively fewer eggs. However, with a few males and females in the same tank, successful breeding can be achieved.

During spawning, the female will retain around 15 eggs in her swimmerets, which are tiny leg-like fins located on the underside of the body.

The incubation period lasts around 20-28 days, after which the eggs will hatch, releasing miniature versions of the parents into the tank. It is crucial to feed them with finely powdered food as they grow.

Diet & Feeding

Cardinal Sulawesi Shrimp are known for their exceptional ability to consume algae and biofilm within the aquarium, making them valuable contributors to a healthy aquatic environment. While their diet largely consists of these natural food sources, it is essential to provide them with a balanced diet. To achieve this, supplement their diet with boiled and blanched vegetables as well as powdered foods.\r\n
