Caloglossa beccarii

Caloglossa beccarii, or «Red moss».

Caloglossa beccarii it is rare thing for aquaristics when algae is purposely used as an ornamental underwater plant. Such is the case for Cladophora aegagropila and red algae called Caloglossa beccarii that has recently appeared in the market and can also be used for decoration of the tank.
Caloglossa is of dark red (or brown) color and consists of elongated elliptical-shaped branching fronds. Easily attaches to the objects like stone and driftwood. Creates mounds just like Riccia fluitans. These features give caloglossa uniqueness and special value for aquascaping. Currently no other plant can give the impression of a red moss in the aquarium.

Caloglossa

Creating an aquascape with Caloglossa, you should take into account some of the nuances. Large fishes, like pterophyllum would eat these algae with pleasure. That is why it is almost impossible to grow this moss in the tanks inhabited by such fishes. Caloglossa is also very fragile and when its fronds fall away from the main mound they can attach not only to driftwood or rocks, but also to other plants. This problem is easily solved, however, since Caloglossa is very sensitive to algaecide used in aquaristics. Just make a local treatment of the places overgrown by these algae with any algaecide and it disappears in a few days.

Like all other algae, Caloglossa doesn't require any special conditions for growth and gets enough nutrients from aquarium fertilizer. Besides, aquarium plants do not inhibit the growth of caloglossa. Unlike many other algae commonly encountered by hobbyists Caloglossa doesn't require intense lighting and grows well even in dark areas and dense plant groups.
