DescriptionBrook Lamprey - Lampetra planeri 2.jpg |
A European Brook Lamprey - Lampetra planeri in search of a stone to bring back to the nest. 11th March 2011 - a brook beside the River Itchen at St Cross, just south of Winchester, Hampshire. Immature lampreys are blind and live between three and seven years in burrows in the mud. They metamorphose into sighted adults, swim upstream, party and die. They are some of our most primitive vertebrates: they have a cartilage skeleton like sharks but lack gill covers and jaws. In this shot you can see the row of seven gill holes behind the eye. They pick up stones with their sucker mouths and move them around to build a nest for their eggs. |
