Description[edit]

Other species, like Pterygoplichthus spp., are often misidentified as Hypostomus plecostomus.

Here follows a textual description of Hypostomus plecostomus, to aid in differentiating the species (source: FishBase):

  • The dorsal fin has one spine and seven soft rays.
  • The anal fin has one spine and three soft rays.
  • The body is stout.
  • The base of the caudal fin is not flattened from top to bottom (caudal peduncle not depressed).
  • The dorsal side (back side) of the head and body is covered with bony plates. The ventral side (belly side) is naked.
