Gen I & II Menu Sprites

All right, so back in Gen I and II, there were no individual menu sprites for every Pokemon available at the time. Some important to the story or well-known Pokemon had unique models. Some of the sprites used are very obviously based on a specific Pokemon (even though they’re used for multiple) and some…. don’t look at all like any Pokemon. Or just vaguely do. 

Let’s take a look, shall we? 

Gen I

Honestly no idea. Looks vaguely like a Seel/Dewgong I suppose. 

Straight up just a Pokeball sprite, but obviously based on Voltorb/Electrode.

Farfetch’d??? Pidgey??? I honestly do not know. 

One that’s pretty obvious: Beedrill 

Another obvious one, it’s Clefairy

Omanyte or Omastar either/or

It’s our iconic mascot, Pikachu.

Bellsprout at my best guess but like??? Only vaguely 

Tauros? Pretty sure it’s a Tauros

Rhydon but cuter tbh

Onix, but those eyes kill me

Gen II

An egg, obviously. Used for well, unhatched eggs. 

Grimer??? Muk??? Doesn’t really matter they’e both globs of sludge

I’m honestly not sure Growlithe or Eevee would be my best guess

Lapras, obviously

Voltorb, again obviously

The bird returns. Still no idea

Honestly idk man. Scyther??? Ledian??? Who knows??

Bulbasaur, duh

Butterfree (though funnily enough, it looks like Mothim now)

Charmander, but someone took its tail flame. MONSTERS

Clefairy makes a return

Diglett, whose nose looks more like a screaming mouth

Dragonite but like, ANGRY 

They somehow made Magikarp more derpy

Gengar. Look at those perfect teeth!

Geodude trying and failing to imitate a teapot

Ho-Oh 

Mr. Mime who now has more ways to haunt my dreams

Weedle, who much like Diglett has a screaming mouth for a nose

Why do Jigglypuff’s eyes look so soulless?

Pikachu but >:

A not-so-odd Oddish

Poliwag who kinda makes me dizzy to look at for too long

Tauros returns, works seeing it as Miltank too

Rhydon makes a comeback too

A shy Shellder

Slowpoke, Team Rocket have been at those tails again

Onix, whose eyes still kill me

Snorlax, who is #Relatable

Squirtle… A weird looking one, but a Squirtle nonetheless

Staryu

Sudowoodo that I could make immature comments about but I won’t

Tentacool who looks creepier than the actual Pokemon

Unown is watching…. aaaaaaaaaalways watching

I wanna say Zubat but it has eyes… but it looks more like Zubat than the other bat Pokemon at the time. Zubat that grew some eyes before evolution???

Well, that’s all of them,. Keep in mind these are MENU sprites, not overworld ones. Whilst most are the same, some Pokemon have different overworld models but have the generic ones in the Party menu (like the Legendary Beasts in Crystal). I’m glad we’ve come a long way from this limited set, but they’re funny to look back on to me with how strange some of them look. 

Anyone got any better guesses for some of them?
