Has become quite rare throughout the country (Ref. 12693), but reported to be found all the year in many places of the Mekong basin (Ref. 37770). Known from Mae Khong at Kranchmar, Tonlé Sap, Beng Kebal Damrey (Ref. 36654). Juveniles measuring 2-6 cm are found at Sray Son Thor in Kompong Cham Province and at Muk Kompul in Kandal Province (Ref. 37770). Also Ref. 33813, 43281.

Migration occurs during full moon at Kratie and Kompong Cham (Ref. 37770). Migrates downstream from May to August from Stung Treng to Kandal and further into the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam, at least to Cai Be (Ref. 37770). This downstream migration is both a spawning and a trophic migration eventually bringing the fish onto floodplain areas during the flood season (Ref. 37770). Exclusively fished by explosives in northern Cambodia (Ref. 12693). Also Ref. 37772.

From Thalabowirrat in Stung Treng Province to the Mekong Delta, a downstream reproductive migrations occur at the onset of the flood season, triggered by a combination of early rainfall and rising water levels (Ref. 37770). Trophic migrations are also undertaken, mainly by juveniles and sub-adults at the onset of the flood season. Smaller fishes of 20 to 60 cm migrate from the Mekong into smaller streams and flooded areas. At Sambor, juveniles occur from Lake Sandan, a floodplain lake (Ref. 37770). One of the favorite food fish; meat is considered excellent; eggs are especially priced; made into "som kai pba eum", in which one part of fish eggs with salt and ground rice added is mixed with 15 parts of meat; the uncooked mix is placed in earthen jars to ferment for a number of days before eating (Ref. 12369). From May to July, it migrates downstream from the Khone Falls, apparently to flooded areas in Southern Cambodia and the Mekong Delta (Ref. 37770). Juveniles around 2 cm appear during November-February from Stung Treng to Sambor and from July to October from Kratie to Kandal (Ref. 37770). Also Ref. 26580, 45353.
