Abstract

Growth and condition of Dawkinsia tambraparniei were examined using the linear length-weight relationship model and the condition factor. A total of 135 fishes were sampled from four lower order streams (Manimuthar, Karayar, Servalar and Kallar) and the downstream section (Kokkarakulam) of the Tamiraparani River in southern Western Ghats, India. The results showed that the exponential values 'b' ranged from 2.57 to 3.64 with the highest 'b' value obtained for the population from Kokkarakulam. The analysis of condition factor also revealed a high condition factor (K=1.56) for the population from Kokkarakulam. The present findings indicate that of the four D. tambraparniei populations examined, the population inhabiting the downstream section of the Tamiraparani River is healthiest.

Zusammenfassung

Untersucht wurden Wachstum und Zustand bei Exemplaren von Dawkinsia tambraparniei zum einen nach dem Lange-Gewicht-Verhaltnis, zum anderen durch Berechnung des Konditionsfaktors. Insgesamt wurden 135 Fische fur die Untersuchung an verschiedenen Orten gefangen: in vier Nebenflussen (Manimuthar, Karayar, Servalar and Kallar) sowie im Unterlauf des Tamiraparani-Flusses (Kokkarakulam) im sudlichen Teil des Westghats, Indien. Die Ergebnisse: Die exponentiellen Werte "b" reichten von 2,57 bis 3,64 mit dem hochsten Wert im Bestand von Kokkarakulam. Auch beim Konditionsfaktor konnte ein hoher Wert (K = 1,51) im Bestand von Kokkarakulam fest-gestellt werden. Die bisherigen Ergebnisse sprechen dafur, dass von den vier untersuchten Populationen der Art D. tambraparniei diejenige, die den Unterlauf des Tamiraparani bewohnt, am gesundesten ist.

La croissance et l'etat general du Dawkinsia tambraparniei ant ete examines a l'aide du modele de relation lineaire taille-poids et du facteur de condition physique. Un total de 135 poissons a ete utilise provenant de quatre cours d'eau de faible importance (Manimuthar, Karayar, Servalar et Kallar) et de la section aval (Kokkarakulam) de la Tamiraparani River au sud des Western Ghats, Inde. Les resultats ont montre que les valeurs exponentielles 'b' variaient de 2,57 a 3,64 avec la valeur 'b' la plus haute observee dans la population du Kokkarakulam. L'analyse du facteur de condition physique aussi a revele un facteur eleve (K = 1,51) pour la population du Kokkarakulam. Ces decouvertes montrent que des quatre populations de D. tambraparniei, celle de la section aval de la Tamiraparani River est la plus saine.

La crescita e lo stato di Dawkinsia tambraparniei sono stati esaminati usando il modello di relazione lineare lunghezza-peso e il fattore di condizione. Un totale di 135 esemplari sono stati campionati da quattro corsi d'acqua di ordine inferiore (Manimuthar, Karayar, Servalar e Kaliar) e la sezione a valle (Kokkarakulam) del fiume Tamiraparani nella regione meridionale del Ghats occidentale, India. I risultati hanno mostrato che i valori esponenziali 'b' variavano da 2.57 a 3.64 con il piu alto valore di 'b' ottenuto per la popolazione dal Kokkarakulam. L'analisi del fattore di condizione ha anche rivelato un alto valore di questo fattore (K = 1.56) per la popolazione da Kokkarakulam. I presenti risultati indicano che tra le quattro popolazioni di D. tambraparniei esaminate, quella che abita il tratto a valle del fiume Tamiraparani e la piu sana.
