    📚 Natural History
    Life Cycle
Spawns in shallow water, on a soft depression excavated by both parents. About 200 eggs are laid and hatch after 5 days, during which time the parents tend, and if necessary fan them. One parent always remains with the eggs while the other forages. Fry are guarded by parents until they almost reach sexual maturity.

    Migration
Amphidromous. Refers to fishes that regularly migrate between freshwater and the sea (in both directions), but not for the purpose of breeding, as in anadromous and catadromous species. Sub-division of diadromous. Migrations should be cyclical and predictable and cover more than 100 km.

    Trophic Strategy
Occurs in lagoons and small streams. Enters estuaries . Often found among marginal roots and weeds in lagoons and some dry zone tanks (now relatively rare in the latter habitat). Feeds on fish fry, zooplankton and algae.
