Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois: What are the Differences Between These Dog Breeds?

Ever wondered what the differences are between Belgian Shepherds and Belgian Malinois? They’re both herding breeds and originate from Belgium, but what distinct differences do they have? Let’s explore Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois to see what they have in common and where they differ.

Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois: Different Breeds?

Interestingly, they’re not viewed as separate breeds everywhere. Belgian Malinois and Belgian Shepherd (also known as Belgian Sheepdog, Groenendael, or Chien de Berger Belge) are recognised as individual breeds by the American Kennel Club, and they’re both members of the AKC herding group. In some countries, the Belgian Malinois, Tervuren, Laekenois, and Belgian Shepherd are grouped together as a single breed.

Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois: Appearance

Belgian Shepherd males stand at around 26 inches tall at the shoulder, with females being smaller. These are slender, agile dogs with long black coats.

Belgian Malinois are a similar size, but their coats are noticeably different. With a short, smooth coat that comes in shades of fawn to mahogany, they have a black mask on their face and ears.

Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois: Temperament and Training

Both Belgian Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are loyal, highly intelligent, hard workers, and make great herding dogs. They’ve both been put to use in other occupations, such as working alongside the police. These are highly trainable dogs and need stimulation, both mental and physical, which means they won’t be suited to everyone.

Belgian Shepherd vs Belgian Malinois: Exercise Requirements

Both breeds are similar in terms of the amount of exercise they need. They require plenty of exercise every day, plus they need human companionship, and so exercising alongside these breeds is a must, as opposed to simply letting them run around a backyard alone. Belgian Malinois in particular have a lot of energy and will need to partake in more activities than a daily walk.

Belgian Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are both intelligent and loyal dogs with many similarities, with the main differences being in their appearance. Before choosing to own one of these breeds, the question must be raised of whether you can provide the necessary exercise and mental stimulation they need.
