Pruning: The Snowmound Spirea typically requires minimal pruning. If desired, prune immediately after flowering to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Light pruning will encourage healthy growth and enhance the plant's natural form.

Fertilization: Feed the Snowmound Spirea in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for shrubs. Follow the recommended application rates on the fertilizer package, and apply it evenly around the base of the plant. This will provide the necessary nutrients for vibrant growth and abundant blooming.

Winter Protection: In zones 5-10, where winters can be chilly, provide protection for the Snowmound Spirea during the colder months. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to insulate the roots and protect them from freezing temperatures. Additionally, consider using burlap or protective covers during periods of extreme cold to safeguard the plant from harsh weather conditions.


To plant the Snowmound Spirea (Spiraea nipponica), choose a location in your garden that receives full sun to partial shade. This spirea variety flourishes in full sun to partial shade, receiving at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can tolerate some shade, ample sunlight exposure will promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
