The Purple Firefish, also known as the Decorated Firefish, Purple Dartfish, Decorated Dartfish, or Flame Firefish, was initially discovered in the Indo-west-Pacific Ocean in 1973 by Randall and Allen. This fascinating fish exhibits a colorful body with varying degrees of yellow to white, transitioning into deep shades of purple that start at the head and extend to maroon-tipped fins.
To maintain the well-being of the Purple Firefish, a spacious 20-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended. The aquascape should include plenty of loose coral rubble, and a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent the fish from jumping out of the tank. While the Purple Firefish is generally not aggressive towards other fish, it can be territorial and may engage in fights with its own kind, unless they are a mated pair.
Regarding its diet, the Purple Firefish primarily feeds on prey suspended in the water column, but it will also pick food from the substrate. A varied diet is essential for its vibrant coloring to thrive, which should include chopped or shaved seafood, frozen food preparations suitable for carnivores, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. Providing a vitamin-enriched diet is crucial to maintain the stunning colors of this fish.
