Dressing Tables of the Rich and Fragrant: Stephanie Seymour

I honestly can’t remember why I was searching for photos of Stephanie Seymour’s dressing table a few nights ago. There was some train of thought (probably connected to her son’s recent arrest, or to the memory of the time I met her husband at his art foundation?) that led me to wonder what perfume(s) she might wear.

Seymour’s dressing table in House Beautiful (January 2, 2015)

A piece about Seymour’s home in House Beautiful mentioned that she had been inspired by a photo of Elizabeth Taylor’s vanity, hence her open display of bottles and brushes on an antique vanity.

I spy…a bottle of Estee Lauder Modern Muse, which makes sense since Seymour is the “face” of Estee Lauder. And I think that’s a Jo Malone fragrance standing next to the Modern Muse. (Jo Malone is owned by Lauder, incidentally.)

In the House Beautiful interview, Seymour names Serge Lutens Nuit de Cellophane as a favorite perfume. I don’t see it in these photos, but I agree that it’s a beautiful scent.

Seymour’s closet, 2014

In an earlier set of photographs that I found on Glamour.com, I noticed a tray of fragrances in Seymour’s roomy “closet” (really a room or rooms in her Greenwich, Connecticut home). This is more interesting, In addition to two bottles of Modern Muse and a Jo Malone bottle, I see Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh Sunshine, a limited edition from 2013. Seymour has been featured in ads for Jacobs’ various lines, so this one isn’t surprising, either.

But! — there’s a black bottle of Lanvin Arpège in one corner of the tray and a tall conical bottle of Issey Miyake Eau d’Issey in another corner. The former is a throwback to classic glamour, and the latter is an iconic scent of the 1990s. I think these two say more about Seymour’s tastes than the various Lauder fragrances.

And I also see Balenciaga Paris (hey, Stephanie! we both like that one!) and at least one bottle of Dior J’Adore.

I’m still trying to identify a few other bottles in this shot. I’ll update if I figure them out.

Bonus! On a closet shelf, next to some jewelry boxes, there’s a bottle of Cire Trudon room spray. Very fancy! It must keep those Birkins smelling nice…

These photos seem less “styled” than most celebrity home shoots in “shelter” magazines, so the fragrance collections are especially intriguing to me. And I’m still a fan of the 1990s “supers,” so there’s that too.

I may write more posts on this subject…stay tuned.

  1. YES PLEASE to future Dressing Tables of the Rich and Fragrant! I am endlessly nosy (ha!) about other people’s beauty preferences and routines. I think I see Nuit de Cellophane in both photos (or at least a Serge Lutens); at the back of the white tray on the vanity, and next to the Jo Malone in the first closet picture.

    1. I am so nosy (hah!) too! and most of the time, these articles don’t actually mention the perfumes on the vanities. They actually seem more interested in the furniture or the wall treatments or what have you. SO WEIRD! I KNOW, RIGHT?
