Abstract. Pontic shad is an economically important fish species targeted in the Bulgarian fisheries since 1925. Statistical data of catches show variation of quantities between 2 t (1970) and 439.19 t (1954) during the period 1925–2010. Regime shift in landings was observed in 1951–1955, when the average catch reached maximum of 217.50 t. Seasonal distribution pattern of shad embraces both coastal and open sea areas where species is dispersed. Size structure of catches includes individuals with fork length between 9 and 35.5 cm. Due to difficulties in morphological identification of the shads in the Black Sea, the genetical markers found during the study give possibility to distinguish 2 species – A. immaculata and A. caspia in the Black Sea. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and esterases (EST) are species specific markers for distinguishing A. immaculata and A. caspia in the Black Sea. Polymorphic variation in MEP-2* locus by A. immaculata could be used for analyses of the Black Sea sha...

Allozyme Variation and Genetic Identification of Shad Species (Pisces: Clupeidae, Genus Alosa) Along Bulgarian Black Sea CoastAll Black Sea shads are listed in IUCN Red List as vulnerable species. The absence of correspondence between morphological and genetic features shows the complexity in genus Alosa taxonomy in Black Sea. To receive precise data for actual species status and respectively conservation of shads, the application of genetic methods are necessary. A comparison between two shad species (A. immaculata and A. caspia) from Bulgarian Black Sea coast and Danube River was carried out on the basis of genetic-biochemical analyses. Twelve enzymes (encoded by 27 loci) and general muscle proteins and haemoglobin (encoded by 43 loci) were investigated. Polymorphic variation in some loci as HB-1*, HB-2*, PROT-1*, PROT-2*, PROT-3*, ADH*, EST-3*, MDH-1*, MEP-1* PGM-2* and SDH* can be used for analyses of Alosa immaculata populations. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a species specific marker for distinguishing A. immaculata and A. caspia. Genetic markers such as: 6-PGDH, SOD and PROT can be used to split th...

Assessing of Pontic Shad (Alosa immaculata, Bennett 1835) Stock Status from Romanian Black Sea CoastWith the growth of the human population, the need for food resources increases, so the pressure on living marine resources also increases. In addition to this aspect, the Black Sea ecosystem during recent decades suffered changes that determined the deterioration of all components of the marine ecosystem, which had direct impact on decreasing the biological diversity and productivity, affecting the quality of life and ecological balance. The species Alosa immaculata (Bennet, 1835) - Pontic shad is of high commercial value and with an important role in the livelihoods of many local communities across the Black Sea coast. However, the status of Pontic shad fisheries is unknown, mainly because is a status of data-poor fish stocks. Thus, growth parameters were determined in a total of 783 individuals with a biomass of 194.5 kg from 9 fishing points of the Romanian Black Sea Coast. For the estimated parameters of length-weight relation the combined data and sexes have been used, coeffici...

Examination of Genetic and Morphologic Structure of Sea-Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L., 1758) Populations in Turkish Coastal Waters2005 •
In this study genetic and morphologic structure of the sea-bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, in Turkish coastal waters were studied. Total 120 individuals were sampled in equal numbers from the Black, Marmara, Aegean and North-eastern Mediterranean Seas. In genetic analyses, four-enzyme systems (G3PDH*, ME*, MDH*, PGI*) were assayed, representing 9 loci (G3PDH-1*, G3PDH-2*, MDH-1*, MDH-2*, MDH-3*, ME*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGI-3*), 2 of which were polymorphic (G3PDH-2*, PGI-3*). Fisher's exact test revealed that there were no genetic differences between populations using 9 loci. Nei's genetic distance was 0.0001 between the Black Sea and Mediterranean samples. Genetic identity was also found to be 0.9999 between the Black and Mediterranean Sea samples. In canonical discriminant function analysis, a high degree of morphologic differentiation was detected between populations. Proportions of correctly classified Aegean Sea (100%) and Black Sea (97%) samples to their original group were hi...

Phylogeography and phenotypic diversity of the pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) of the Northern Black Sea Coast2014 •
ABSTRACT This paper studies the origin and the genetic and morphological diversity of the pumpkinseed sunfish, a North American invader that is actively expanding its range in the Northern Black Sea Coast. Based on an analysis of variability of the nucleotide sequence of the mtDNA cyt b locus, it was found that all populations of the Northern Black Sea Coast (basins of Dnieper, Dniester, and Danube rivers) are represented by one haplotype. Intraspecific variability is absent. Phylogeographic analysis revealed that the most related haplotype is in a population of pumpkinseed sunfish from New Germany Lake in the Potomac Riverbasin (Maryland, United States), which makes it possible to consider it a parent of the investigated populations. Morphological variation oin countable traits was highly homogeneous. Significant differentiation of a sample from the population of the Dnieper Reservoir from the populations of the Danube and Dniester was found for plastic traits of both the body and cranium. Analysis of the trajectories of development showed that the Dnieper is inhabited by a "pelagic" morpho-ecological form of pumpkinseed sunfish, while the Dniester and Danube is inhabited by a "littoral" form. It is suggested that the success of the settlement of this North American species in the Northern Black Sea Coast does not depend on the origin or the level of its genetic diversity but is instead likely to be ensured by the realization of its available discrete morpho-ecological variability.

Genetic diversity and morphological characterisation of three turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L., 1758) populations along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast2021 •
Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L., 1758) is a valuable commercial fish species classified as endangered. The conservation and sustainability of the turbot populations require knowledge of the population’s genetic structure and constant monitoring of its biodiversity. The present study was performed to evaluate the population structure of turbot along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast using seven pairs of microsatellites, two mitochondrial DNA (COIII and CR) and 23 morphological (15 morphometric and 8 meristic) markers. A total of 72 specimens at three locations were genotyped and 59 alleles were identified. The observed number of alleles of microsatellites was more than the effective number of alleles. The overall mean values of observed (Ho) and expected heterogeneity (He) were 0.638 and 0.685. A high rate of migration between turbot populations (overall mean of Nm = 17.484), with the maximum value (19.498) between Shabla and Nesebar locations, was observed. This result corresponded to t...
