2013, Check List
The present paper reports the first record of non-native species Poecilia sphenops Valenciennes, 1846 in northeastern Brazil in rio Sergipe basin, a coastal drainage of the Sergipe state. This species was collected at seven sites in the Caatinga biome. The cause of the introduction is not known, but we believe it is a direct impact of the aquarium trade through the aquarium dumping performed by hobbyists. The presence of P. sphenops in natural waterbodies increases concerns for interference with native ecosystems, and the risk of eggs predation in native species with low fecundity and absence of parental care such as Astyanax lacustris and Serrapinnus heterodon, competition and hybridization with the native poeciliid Poecilia vivipara.

During a field expedition in 2020, we recorded specimens of an invasive platy fish, Xiphophorus maculatus, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. This new occurrence, in the Municipality of São Luis, is only the second time that this non-native species has been found in northeastern Brazil. We provide an updated list of all invasive species recorded from the island of São Luís, highlighting the negative impacts they may confer for the native biodiversity.

Recent field expeditions in the Jari river drainage, in addition to examination of uncatalogued poeciliids, allowed the identification of specimens as Poecilia (Pamphorichthys) scalpridens (Garman, 1895). The known range of this species includes lakes and igarapés in the lower reaches of tributaries near the main channel of the Amazon River between Parintins and the mouth of the Tapajós River. Here, we expand the range of P. scalpridens by about 300 km. We provide the main diagnostic characters of P. scalpridens to facilitate identification of specimens collected in future field surveys.

Cnesterodon hypselurus is an endangered species from the Upper Paraná River basin, with distribution restricted to three streams with diminished habitat quality. An updated distribution including new locations in the Tibagi River basin is presented, increasing its area of occurrence and providing a new low-elevation record of 728 m. The recognition of these populations suggests that C. hypselurus might have a larger distribution in the east-central Paraná State region, changing to vulnerable the previously endangered status of the species.

We provide the first record of Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866) in a river basin in the northeastern Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Jaguaribe River basin, João Pessoa, Paraíba state, Brazil. Two hundred eighty-one specimens, corresponding to 143 males and 138 females of X. maculatus, were collected at nine sites along the basin, from 2017 to 2019. Specimens total length ranged from 17.5 to 26.6 mm in males and from 11.7 to 32.7 mm in females. Introduction of non-native species greatly threatens the biological diversity worldwide. When introduced into a new habitat, X. maculatus usually decreases microcrustacean, macroinvertebrate and native fish populations.

Poecilia amazonica Garman, 1895 was described based on syntypes collected at Santa Cruz, Pará, Brazil by Mr. Caleb Cooke in October 1859. The type-series was originally deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, under the catalog numbers MCZ 27573 (128 ex.), and MCZ 69635 (97 ex.). Five specimens were subsequently transferred to University of Michigan Museum of Zoology (UMMZ 146750), and six specimens were sent to the National Museum of Natural History (USNM 120286). Carl Hubbs examined parts of the type-series and considered the syntypes to be Micropoecilia parae (Eigenmann, 1894), as inferred from label information handwritten by Hubbs in 1944 and placed inside the jars of lots MCZ 27573 and UMMZ 146750 (ex MCZ 27573). However, Hubbs did not publish anything concerning the nomenclatural status of P. amazonica. Consequently, the name Poecilia amazonica has been considered valid by several authors since Garman's description (e.g. Rosen & Bailey, 1963; ...
