Cryptocoryne cognata Schott is a threatened species distributed in the entire Konkan stretch covering Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. It was rediscovered in 1990 after not being documented for one and half centuries. The data concerning its morphology, distribution and ecological preferences are presented in this paper in order to contribute to the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) goals and to assist taxonomists in assessing and protecting this species from extinction in future.

A new calcicolous variety of Cryptocoryne nurii Furtado (Araceae) from Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia2015 •
A new aroid variety, Cryptocoryne nurii var. raubensis isdescribed and illustrated in colour. The new variety differs from var. nurii inthe always short spathe tube, a relative long kettle, and a peduncle whichadjusts its length to the water level so that the spathe acts as a floating buoyin order to ensure that the opening is always above the water surface with anopen entrance and exit for the pollinating insects. The distribution andcalcicolous ecology are briefly discussed.

Four species complexes in Cryptocoryne were included in a study of genetic diversity: The C. beckettii complex (Sri Lanka), the C. crispatula complex (Mainland Asia), and selected accessions from the diand polyploid cordate leaved species from Malesia, altogether comprising 400+ accessions. The Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) method was discriminative not only within but also between species complexes. Within the cordate leaved Malesian species, it was also possible to discriminate between diploids, tetraploids and hexaploids forming very robust relationship groupings. The AFLP study also revealed that, geographical proximity exposed closer genetical relationship than morphologically similar accessions geographically apart.

Natural hybridization has been considered a source of taxonomic complexity in Cryptocoryne. A combined study of DNA sequencing data from internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and trnK-matK region of chloroplast DNA was used to identify the parents of Cryptocoryne putative hybrids from Peninsular Malaysia. Based on the morphological intermediary and sympatric distribution, the plants were tentatively identified as the hybrid Cryptocoryne ×purpurea nothovar. purpurea; plants were pollen sterile and had long been considered to be hybrids, possibly between two related and co-existing species, C. cordata var. cordata and C. griffithii. The C. ×purpurea nothovar. purpurea status was independently confirmed by the presence of an additive ITS sequence pattern from these two parental species in hybrid individuals. Analysis of the chloroplast trnK-matK sequences showed that the hybridization is bidirectional with the putative hybrids sharing identical sequences from C. co...

The narrow-leaved Cryptocoryne crispatula Engl. from the far eastern Thailand has proven to be different from the Vietnamese C. crispatula Engl. var. tonkinensis (Gagnep.) N. Jacobsen. It is characterized by having the most narrow leaves within C. crispatula , and a spathe with a very short tube and a long, conspicuously spirally twisted limb. It is here described as a new variety: Cryptocoryne crispatula Engl. var. kubotae N. Jacobsen & Bastmeijer, var. nov.

The ecological study of Cryptocoryne pallidinervia Engler was conducted at three different locations vis. Sungai Keranji (Lundu), Sungai Batu (Triso, Sri Aman) and Lingga Peat Swamp Forest Reserve (Lingga, Sri Aman). The study comprised of morphological characteristics, growth pattern and biomass allocation of C. pallidinervia, forest structure and edaphic conditions of the location of C. pallidinervia were carried out. The total dry weight (g/m2), plant density, total leaves per m2, total leaf area (cm2/m2), leaf area ratio (cm2/g), specific leaf area (cm2/g), leaf weight ratio (g/g), petiole weight ratio (g/g) and root weight ratio (g/g) varied between localities. Genomic DNA of 18 accessions was amplified with the M13 universal primer (5’- TTATGAAACGACGGCCAGT-3’). A total of 18 distinctive PCR patterns were obtained which composed of 3 to 20 bands with the size ranging from 500bp to 3kb. The PCR profile was further analyzed to establish genetic diversity between through the construction of dendrogram. Cluster analysis of genetic relatedness had divided the C. pallidinervia accessions into four different major clusters. All big leaf accessions were grouped together whereas the small leaf accessions can be found in all clusters. Besides that, Bintulu accessions were highly differentiated among the others since they grouped together in different clusters. This indicates that the PCR method with M13 universal primer is a rapid and reliable method to study genetic relatedness of C. pallidinervia accessions from different locations.
