Gambusia is an economically important fish for controlling insect pests and decorating aquarium by ornamental varieties. The study on Gambusia affinis was conducted during January to December, 2008 in the Curzon Hall Area, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The reproductive season of Gambusia begins on in March and ends in October and was found to be multiple breeders. Larger female produce large number of offspring than smaller females and the number of the young decreases as the season progresses. The anal fin of the females become small and rounded while the males become elongated and tube shaped at the age of 28 days. Fin rays observed in adult males but not in females and the abdomen of the females becomes fatter and larger. Females are larger in size and weight than males.

Life history pattern of mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859) in the Tajan River (Southern Caspian Sea to Iran2011 •
Investigation of the ecology of introduced species in new habitats can allow determinations of the degree, direction, and rate of evolutionary change. The introduction of Gambusia holbrooki in the southern Caspian Sea presents such a situation. We evaluated the life history traits of mosquitofish in the Tajan River basin. A total of 744 G. holbrooki specimens were collected between January and December 2008. The maximum observed ages are 0+ years for males and 1+ years for females. Both sexes grew allometrically (negative for males: b=2.442 and positive for females: b=3.232). The overall sex ratio is unbalanced and dominated by females. GSI values suggest that this population of G. holbrooki matures between February–July. The highest mean GSI value is 1.80 for males and 15.97 for females in May. Egg diameter ranges from 1.00 to 3.00 mm with a mean value of 2.098 mm. Absolute fecundity varied from 7 to 57 eggs. Both ova diameter and absolute fecundity were positively correlated to fish size (length and weight). Fecundity relative to total weight fluctuated from 34.44 to 582.64 eggs/g, and to total length from 2.33 to 12.95 eggs/cm. Both were negatively correlated with female size. The characteristics of this population are important with respect to life history of the species.

Age, growth, sex ratio and diet of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 in Seyhan Dam Lake (Adana/Turkey)2013 •
The aim of this study is to provide necessary information on the biology of mosquitofish in Seyhan Dam Lake in Adana, which is located in southern part of Turkey. The population structure of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 was studied in Seyhan Dam Lake. A total of 1582 specimens (772 males and 810 females) were collected monthly from January to December, 2007. The age composition of the sample range between 0+ and 2+in both sexes. The sex ratio was M:F= 1:1.04. The length-weight relationship calculated for all individuals, with W=0.0129 x L 2.927 . von Bertalanffy growth parameters were for males, L∞=3.31cm, K=0.6597 year -1 , to =0.9483 year; for females L∞=6.62cm, K=0.2369 year 1 , to =0.9259 year; for all samples, L∞=5.84cm, K=0.2369 year -1 , to =-1.0740 year. A total of 102 stomachs were examined and total of organisms identified from alimentary canal. The diet mainly consist of Diptera (Chironomidae (pupa) 29.40%; Diptera (adult) 24.50%), Egg (mosquito 14...

Influence of Different Light Intensities on Growth, Survival and Hatchling Success in the Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis2015 •
In this study, we examined growth, survival and reproductive success of the viviparous fish Gambusia affinis exposed to different light intensities. The specific growth and survival rates were significantly lower in fish exposed to low light intensity (1250 lx) compared to those of controls, whereas these parameters were not significantly different in fish maintained at moderate (2900 lx) and high (4050 lx) light intensities. The condition factor was good in control fish compared to those kept in artificial light. Maximum numbers of early and late stage embryos were found in the abdominal cavity of fish exposed to moderate and high intensity light respectively. However, highest number of juveniles was recorded from fish maintained at high intensity light. These results suggest that low intensity light affects growth and survival rate, but hatchling success is maximized at high illumination condition in G. affinis.
Abstract The mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis is the best alternative to insecticides and a good biological control agent. The mosquito fish collected from natural water resources, is about 2000 meter above mean sea level areas viz. Avalanche, T.R.Bazaar, Gori, Murlimund, Katteri and Ralia Dam are located in the Ooty and Coonoor Taluks of Nilagiri district of Tamil Nadu state. In order to assess the food preference of G.affinis in the natural water resource i.e. affinity towards mosquitoes immature, individual mosquito fish 50 numbers from every area were dissected the gut content and examined for the remnants of mosquito larvae, zooplanktons and other food and further estimated in terms of percentage. The result indicates that except at T.R.Bazaar and Murlimund the presence of mosquito larvae in the gut content is almost zero. The mosquito larvae forms food share 12.0% and 9.0 % in T.R.Bazaar and Murlimund, respectively. Gut content analysis shows that the other prey forms the major share in all the natural water than

A Review of the Biology of Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki2005 •
Population growth (length-weight relationship), and reproductive potential (e.g. fecundity, and sex-ratio) of five important fish species ('mola': Amblypharyngodon mola, 'puti': Puntius sophore, 'tengra': Mystus vittatus, 'shing': Heteropneustes fossilis and 'taki': Channa punctatus) collected from two important fresh water bodies (namely Hilna beel and Beel Kumari beel) Rajshahi, Bangladesh, were studied. Population growth pattern by length-weight relationship (W=aL b) for the species differed, and exhibited positive allometric growth (P. sophore in Hilna beel), isometric growth (A. mola and C. punctatus in Hilna beel) and negative allometric growth (M. vittatus & H. fossilis in Hilna beel and A. mola, P. sophore, M. vittatus, C. punctatus and H. fossilis in Beel Kumari beel). The results denoted that fecundity of mature females followed a non-linear relationship (F=aL b) with total length and exhibited positive allometric growth (b>3) with some exception (A. mola in Hilna beel and M. vittatus in Beel Kumari beel). Fecundity of mature females also increased with total body weight and ovary weight following a linear relationship (F=a+bW). Differences in values of sex-ratios with seasons for all species in this study may have resulted from different environmental factors as well as breeding seasons. The findings of this study would be useful in imposing adequate regulations for the conservation of these fascinating fishes in the fresh water bodies of Bangladesh.
The ticto barb Puntius ticto (Hamilton 1822) is a small, indigenous fish species of Bangladesh that is widely distributed in the natural waters of Asian countries. This study describes the relationships between body size, weight, condition (Fulton’s, KF; allometric, KA, KR; and relative weight, WR) and fecundity of the threatened species P. ticto from the Ganges River, northwestern Bangladesh. A total of 24 mature female specimens were collected by the traditional fishing gears from March to August 2006. For each individual, total (TL), fork (FL), standard length (SL), and ovary length (OL) were measured by digital slide calipers, while body (BW) and ovary weight (OW) were taken by a digital balance. Total fecundity (FT) of each female was calculated as the number of eggs found in each ovary, whereas relative fecundity (FR) was the number of eggs per gram of fish weight. The results showed that TL of P. ticto varied from 9.10 to 10.80 cm, with calculated mean ± SD as 9.77±0.57 cm. Body weights extended from 14.00 to 24.00 g, with calculated mean ± SD as 17.83±3.39 g. The mean FT was 2586±700 and ranged from 1611 to 4130. BW was more significantly correlated with total fecundity (r2>0.633; p<0.001) than various other body metrics. The results also indicated significant correlation between length-weight (df=22, t-test≥8.86, p<0.001); FT -KF (rs=0.473; p=0.019), FT-KA (rs=0.502; p=0.012), and FT-WR (rs=0.483; p=0.016), but insignificant correlations were found between FT-GSI (rs=0.309; p=0.141) and FR-with various other body metrics. The knowledge of fecundity would be useful to impose adequate regulations for the conservation of this threatened species in the Ganges River and nearby areas of Bangladesh.
