Induced breeding of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) was done in aquaria in the laboratory using carp pituitary extract. An intramuscular injection was given with the single dose of 50 mg and 100 mgkg-1 body weight in males and females respectively. The female brood responded to lay eggs at 8-10 h latency period. The breeding performance and fertilization rate was higher when two males were used for every female. The present study observed fertilization rate of 96 ± 1.41and 84± 1.41 while male and female ratio was 2:1 and 1:1 respectively. The first cleavage began at a 20 min after fertilization. The morula, blastula and gastrula stage was completed at about 4 h, 5 h and 30 min and 7 h and 30 min respectively after fertilization. The details of fertilized eggs, cleavage and developmental stages are documented with photograph. Healthy larvae hatched after 21-22 h.

Comparative study of analogue hormones and the embryonic, larval and juvenile development on the induced breeding of climbing perch (Anabas testudineus, Bloch, 1792)2015 •
This study showed that average number of eggs produced by the Anabas testudineus female using LHRHa hormone (2773 eggs in LHRHa; 393 eggs in SGnRHa) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those in the SGnRHa hormone group. However, the diameters of eggs were smaller using LHRHa hormone (0.87mm in LHRHa; 1.04 mm in SGnRHa). No significant difference was found in egg fertilization rates irrespective of the treatment. The latency period of the A. testudineus was 1 h shorter when using LHRHa. First cleavage occurred at 2.30 h after the egg fertilization. The eggs completed the 128-cell division within 4 h after fertilization and entered the early gastrula stage at 6 h. The embryonic body was formed at 12 h and the fish larvae hatched at 17 – 18 h. The larvae entered the juvenile stage in 16 days and reached maturation in 2 months. This study suggests that LHRHa was more effective than SGnRHa in climbing perch.

Reproduction enhancement of climbing perch from reared inland water in the controlled environment has done successfully to generate its broodstocks and offsprings. This species is potential to create the sustainability production in the future because they offer a promising price, so it needs a further study for optimizing the quality of broodstock and its offsprings. This study aimed to analyze the reproduction of female broodstocks from various family F1 and F2 by adding multiple dietary supplements in the different dose. The research was conducted on Fish Hatchery Unit Mulia Plaju, Palembang for three months and biology laboratory in Agriculture Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Palembang. The research method used completely randomized design with three replications, began by rearing the female broodstock (F1 and F2) with adding dietary supplement for three treatments, they were P1: vitamin E (250 mg/kg dietary weight), P2: vitamin C (125 mg/kg dietary weight), and P3: Spirulin...

A one year study was conducted from January-December 2014 to investigate the reproductive biology of Vietnamese Climbing Perch in earthen pond. The female fish elucidates rounded, swollen abdomen and reddish pelvic fin while the male fish also possess a reddish pelvis fins but generally smaller, narrower. The surfaces of male’s pectoral were little rough during the breeding season. The Gonado-somatic index (GSI) value of female Anabus testudineus was ranged from 12.71±0.73 (July) to 1.13±0.10 (October) while hepato-somatic index (HSI) value of female was ranged from 4.37±0.64 (January) to 1.58±0.19 (July). The GSI and HSI were inversely related with each other. The fecundity was counted from the month of April to July by using gravimetric method where absolute fecundity during April was 16832.80± 673.34 and during July was 46186.14±2219.15. The relationship between gonad weight and fecundity, body weight and fecundity showed strong positive relation with regression co-efficient of 0...

Efficacy of exogenous hormone (GnRHa) for induced breeding of climbing perch Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) and influence of operational sex ratio on spawning success2016 •
The climbing perch, Anabas testudineus, is an air-breathing fish having great consumer preference as a food fish and is considered a prime candidate species for aquaculture. Spawning success is an important issue while using hormones for captive induced breeding. In the first experiment, a trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of a synthetic Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone analog (sGnRHa) on the spawning success of climbing perch. Female fish were administered six different doses each with a single intramuscular injection of sGnRHa hormone at 0.002 (TOD1), 0.005 (TOD2), 0.01 (TOD3), 0.015 (TOD4), 0.02 (TOD5), 0.03 (TOD6) μg/g body weight. Similarly, males were administered half of the hormone dose of females in all the respective treatment groups. The greatest (P<0.05) relative fecundity (715.13±15.0 eggs/g female body weight) and fertilization percentage rates (93.1±8.0%) occurred when female fish were treated at the 0.015μg/g body weight dose. There was a reduction in relat...

In this study a synthetic hormone WOVA-FH is injected intramuscularly for the induced breeding of Anabas tes tudineus in three different breeding sets during August to July. Breeding sets were made on the basis of the number of female and male ratio as Set-I= 1:1, Set-II=1:2 & Set-III=1:3 respectively. WOVA-FH was injected intramuscularly in single dose (0.9 ml/kg body weight for female and 0.4ml/kg body weight for male). Hormonal action was started within 30 minutes of post injection in all the fishes of three sets, where the fishes showed some uncommon behaviors than controlled fishes. The restless behavior of males was observed more in comparison to females. The agitation of fishes was reduced by decreasing the water temperature nearer to 26C within one hour by adding the ice cubes. Then the courtship behavior (pairing & chasing) of female and male fishes was started in the above three sets. However, the courtship behavior shown by the fishes of different sets were quite interest...

This study was part of a program oriented towards domestication of native freshwater fishes in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, in particular the climbing perch (Anabas testudineus, Bloch 1972). Previous studies have shown considerable variation between climbing perch populations, including in characters of importance for domestication. This study focussed on reproductive and morphological characters of the climbing perch population in Sigi District, specifically gonad maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), fecundity, length-weight relation (W = aL b), length-length relationship (SL = a+b•TL), Fulton's condition factor K and the meristic formula. Specimens (n = 503) were collected in 2014, 2015 and 2019. Total length varied from 42 to 208 mm total length with body weight from 1.2 to 209.9 g. Overall sex ratio was balanced (1:1). The smallest specimens with mature gonads were: male TL = 72 mm; W = 8.1 g and female TL = 84 mm, W = 10.4 g. The condition factor K of males (mean≈1.68) was generally lower than for females (mean≈1.84); however the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Fecundity, estimated using a gravimetric method, varied from 1,556 to 70,973, correlated positively and significantly with size (p < 0.001). The GSI of females in gonad maturity stage IV was high (mean 11.56%), significantly correlated with Fulton's condition factor K (p < 0.05) but not length or weight (p > 0.05). Gonad development patterns indicate a spawning peak during July-August. The meristic formula was D, XVIII+9; A, X+9; P, 13; V, I+5; C, 16. The length-weight relation showed isometric growth (b≈3). The length-length relation (SL≈0.56+0.806•TL) was highly significant (p < 0.001, R 2 = 0.984).

Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) is a much demanded fish in the northeastern part of India, yet the absence of a standardized method to induce breeding remains a major constraint in the development of aquaculture of this species. In this study, breeding was induced using 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 ml/kg body weight of the synthetic hormone Ovatide and compared with fish injected with 30 mg carp pituitary extract (CPE) per kg body weight or 0.5 ml saline (control). Male and female brooders were injected once with an identical dose and left to spawn in tubs at a ratio of 2:1. No breeding occurred in the saline-injected control fish. There was partial spawning in the 0.1 and 0.2 Ovatide treatments and complete spawning in fish injected with 0.3 Ovatide. Spawning and number of eggs in fish injected with 0.3 Ovatide did not statistically differ from results in fish injected with CPE (p≥0.05). The present experiment suggests that Ovatide at 0.3 ml/kg body weight is optimal for seed production of...
