Eel

The eel is a member of the ‘Anguilla’ fish family. Its scientific name is Anguilla Anguilla. In some regions of Italy, the female is known as the “Capito”. Widespread in the Adriatic Sea, the eel populates either salt water or fresh water.
The eel is a seabed fish: it prefers muddy and sandy seabeds, both freshwater and saltwater. This fish can thrive even in conditions of poor oxygenation and copes well with variations in climate, salinity and pressure. Eel fishing is practised with different techniques, using nets, pots and special types of lines like “Mazzacchera”, in which hangs a “crown” of earthworms. In many regions of Italy, the breeding of eels has spread.
Eel meat is tasty but very fatty.
