On the heels of opening its popular Claude Monet exhibit, “The Truth of Nature,” Denver Art Museum today announced it will host a major exhibition of Mexican artists next year, featuring the works of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
Titled “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection,” the show will feature more than 150 original works that tell the story of Mexican “national identity and creative spirit,” according to a press statement.
The exhibition will open Oct. 25, 2020 and run through Jan. 17, 2021 in the museum’s Anschutz and Martin & McCormick Galleries
The traveling exhibition offers 20 works from the influential, enduringly popular Kahlo. “Seven of Frida’s self-portraits will be on view in this exhibition, including her 1943 painting titled “Diego on my Mind,” where she depicts herself wearing a Tehuana dress and reflects on her romantic relationship with Diego, following their short-lived divorce in 1939,” according to the release.
Also featured in the show will be Kahlo and Rivera’s contemporaries Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gunther Gerzso, María Izquierdo and Carlos Mérida. “The exhibition also will cover the topic of important women artists during this period,” according to the release.
The show was organized by MondoMostre and curated locally by Rebecca Hart, the museum’s Vicki and Kent Logan Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.
