How does the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid drive? The Panamera 4S E-Hybrid is brutally quick, hitting 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. That's high-end sports car territory. An electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission delivers low-end torque until the V6's turbos build boost. The electric motor means the Panamera allows for a short amount of all-electric driving. The transmission is lightning quick and always seems to be in the right gear at the right time. Braking is equally impressive, especially for a hybrid. The car stopped from 60 mph in just 99 feet, again well into sports car territory.

While Porsche's engineers can only do so much to hide the car's weight, handling is still impressive. The steering is direct and responsive, and the suspension keeps the car planted and steady. Standard all-wheel drive means there's no shortage of grip.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid? The Panamera isn't the quietest or most comfortable luxury car on the road today, but it still feels refined. Ride comfort is surprisingly good for something that handles so well, a credit to the adjustable air suspension that can firm up in Sport mode for improved performance. Most road imperfections are muted, but the Panamera never feels soft or floaty. We found the seats to be comfortable and supportive too. The biggest weak spot is the somewhat cumbersome climate control settings, including vents that can only be adjusted via a touchscreen. Overcomplicated.

As this is a plug-in hybrid, you can drive this Panamera in full EV mode. The Panamera can roll silently for a while, though you'll know the exact instant this turbocharged V6 comes alive. The exhaust note is excellent for a V6, but it can sound almost excessive if you've been cruising in EV mode.

How’s the interior? The Panamera interior is a spacious and well laid out, with most major controls within easy view and reach. It's easy to get a comfortable seating position, and the steering wheel offers enough adjustment to where it never blocks the gauges. Visibility as a whole is fairly good, though the narrow rear window does hurt the view rearward. Getting in and out is relatively easy, and the doors (without detents) can stay open at any angle.

The wide center console uses somewhat annoying touch-capacitive controls. Occasionally a button required multiple presses to work. The infotainment system is pretty good and easy to navigate, but some functions such as interior lighting adjustment are hidden several menus deep.

How’s the tech? Porsche offers a decent array of tech in the Panamera, but much of it must be added as an option and is not included as standard equipment. In-car tech works well enough, but there are still a few weak spots. The Panamera comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto smartphone connectivity. A single USB-C port and a couple of 12-volt outlets aren't enough these days, though there is a wireless charging pad. The built-in navigation system works fine, with easy-to-use directions and a clear map that can be displayed in the instrument cluster. Our test vehicle's Bose audio system was fantastic.

How’s the storage? It's a mixed bag when it comes to the Panamera E-Hybrid's cargo space. Like other Panameras, this car has a hatch rather than a trunk. There's 14.2 cubic feet of cargo space, slightly less than the non-hybrid Panamera's 17.6 cubic feet. The difference is because of the E-Hybrid's battery pack, but the case for the charging cable takes up a lot of room as well. That aside, the cargo area itself is wide and flat. The rear seats can fold down in a 40/20/40 split for even more space. Storage up front isn't as impressive. The center console is shallow, and the door pockets don't provide much more storage.

Installing a car seat can be frustrating as the anchors are buried in the cushions, though they are clearly marked. Attaching an anchor to the back of the seat requires removing the cargo cover.

How economical is the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid? The Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid is estimated at 22 mpg combined once the EV-only range has been exhausted. That's better than most of the base-trim competition and significantly better than more powerful variants that can match the Panamera punch for punch. The plug-in hybrid powertrain also allows for an estimated 19 miles of all-electric driving. In Edmunds' testing, we managed to go 23 miles solely on electric propulsion and saw 27.9 mpg over our 115-mile evaluation route after the battery was empty.

Is the Panamera 4S E-Hybrid a good value? The Panamera 4S E-Hybrid slots between the standard 4 E-Hybrid and the V8-powered GTS in the middle of the Panamera lineup. It's typically pricier than other luxury plug-in hybrids, though nothing else can match the 4S E-Hybrid's performance. A reasonably optioned 4S E-Hybrid is about as much as an Audi RS 7 and slightly less than a BMW M8 and Mercedes-AMG GT 63 sedan. The Porsche is a step behind that trio in performance but is significantly more efficient.

Porsche includes a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty. The battery is covered for eight years/80,000 miles. Porsche also includes four years/50,000 miles of roadside assistance and one year/10,000 miles of free maintenance.

The Panamera is a big and heavy sedan but it knows how to entertain. It's supremely fast, but performance is approachable and the Panamera can be fun, even on city streets. The electric motor supplies a lot of low-end power that helps until the turbos build boost, so the Panamera feels quick everywhere. It's subtle, too, especially when silently cruising in EV mode. That said, it doesn't look or feel like a hybrid. Dip your toe into the throttle or turn the drive mode dial to Sport and the Panamera really comes alive. It doesn't feel quite as special as an Audi RS 7 or BMW M8, but few sedans provide as much fun and entertainment as the Porsche.

Which Panamera does Edmunds recommend?

As impressive as the base Panamera is, we recommend opting for the Panamera 4S for its additional power and all-wheel-drive traction. The lower-tier trim also keeps the price in check and can be optioned with available features from higher trims.

Porsche Panamera models

The 2023 Porsche Panamera comes in three body styles: the regular Panamera sedan, which has a hatchback-style trunk; a longer-wheelbase Executive model with additional rear legroom; and the Sport Turismo, which has a wagon-like profile and additional cargo space. Several trim levels are available, distinguished by different drivetrains and features, but not in every body style. These include the base Panamera, Panamera 4, Panamera 4S, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, Panamera 4S E-Hybrid, Panamera GTS, Panamera Turbo S and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.
