This vegetable produces long and curved fruits that appear like snakes hanging on the supports or ground. This subtropical plant grows very fast in warm climates and produces lots of fruits for a long time. It is best to grow this vine plant along the supports for obtaining young straight fuits. Young fruits are harvested and cooked like Luffa. Seed has hard coat and may take a long time to germinate. There are several varieties with different fruit skin and length grown in Asia. An interesting plant for home garden and fresh market.
This early ripening prolific variety is pest resistant and produces over a long season. The dark green and white striped fruit are 1” in diameter and grow up to 12” long. Popular in Indian, South Asian, and Southeast Asian cuisines.
Culinary tips: Use in curries. The shoots, tendrils and leaves can also be eaten as greens.
Cultivation: Requires a long, warm growing season. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The seed coat is hard and should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarified before sowing. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4’ tall. Space mounds 4-6’ apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. Snake gourd flowers during daylight hours. May need hand pollination to set fruit Harvest young tender fruit before it matures to retain its tenderness.
