History of the Maserati Quattroporte

On October 30, 1963, the Turin Motor Show kicked off its 45th edition. What stole the spotlight at the Maserati stand? None other than the debut of the Quattroporte! Fast forward to today, and we're celebrating the 60th anniversary of this luxurious sedan, which has been paving the way for six generations of drivers. Fullerton Maserati is thrilled to be a part of this milestone, and if you're curious to dive into the fascinating history of the Maserati Quattroporte, stick around for more juicy details!

The First-Generation Quattroporte

Born from Italian audacity and a bold vision, the first Quattroporte roared onto the scene. The original Maserati Quattroporte was built between 1963 and 1969. It was a large saloon powered by V8 engines—both firsts for a series of Maserati automobile productions. A pioneer in its time, it housed a thunderous, racing-derived V8 beneath a dynamic, sculpted body and a luxuriously refined interior. Its spacious, welcoming cockpit beckoned, while its majestic aura demanded the limelight. It was destined to spawn a lineage of extraordinary cars, each pushing the boundaries of performance and sophistication, even today.

The Second-Generation Quattroporte

In October 1974, a curious chapter unfolded in Maserati's storied journey. At the Paris and Turin Motor Shows, the marque unveiled the Quattroporte II, a stark departure from its predecessors and anything else bearing the Trident badge. Hydro-pneumatic suspension, a novel feature for Maserati, promised a silken ride. The front fascia, a Bertone masterpiece penned by Marcello Gandini, featured four fixed headlamps flanked by two swiveling directional ones, adding a touch of theatrical flair. Under the hood, a V6 engine hummed, starkly contrasting the legendary V8s that had defined Maserati's legacy. While a technical anomaly, the Quattroporte II stood as a testament to the brand's willingness to explore, push boundaries, and forge its path, even during times of change.

The Third-Generation Quattroporte

Under the new leadership of Alejandro de Tomaso-GEPI, the legendary Maserati Quattroporte roared back to life with a vengeance. Leaving behind the curious Citroën-era of front-wheel drive, the third generation embraced its heritage head-on, reclaiming its soul with a thunderous rear-wheel drive and a mighty Maserati V8. Gone was the borrowed Citroën SM engine prototype, replaced by a quartet of all-new V8s, meticulously crafted for the Kyalami and pulsating with Maserati's signature power. Even the team transformed, with engineering mastermind Giulio Alfieri stepping down and Aurelio Bertocchi taking the helm. The comfort of the Quattroporte II's hydraulic steering was traded for a more conventional setup, while the suspension, inspired by the Jaguar XJ, promised a refined glide along the tarmac. From the ground up, this was a Maserati reborn, a triumphant declaration of its unwavering identity.

The Fourth-Generation Quattroporte

In 1994, Maserati entered a new era. Freshly acquired by Fiat, the marque unveiled the fourth-generation Quattroporte, a bold statement under a changing sky. This sleek four-door, the first from the Italian giant's embrace, marked a departure from its predecessors in size and lineage. Built upon a stretched and refined platform borrowed from the Biturbo saloon, the Quattroporte was surprised with its compact proportions. Under the hood, a choice of potent engines pulsated. The familiar twin-turbocharged V6 from the Biturbo offered spirited performance, while later models were graced with the thunderous AM578 V8 from the Shamal flagship. While smaller than its ancestors and offspring, the Quattroporte refused to compromise on power or presence.

The Fifth-Generation Quattroporte

In 2003, a new chapter unfolded for the Maserati Quattroporte. Unveiled under the Frankfurt sky, it stretched its muscular frame 19.7 inches longer than before and claimed a more regal stance on a wheelbase extended by 15.7 inches. This grand tourer was ready to conquer continents, not just city streets. Beneath its hood, a new naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 honed to a 395-hp beat. This was the Quattroporte reborn, a statement of elegance, power, and unwavering presence. It was a car that invited you to conquer open roads, to revel in the wind's caress and the engine's thrumming lullaby. It was an icon redefined.
