Mangroves are salt-tolerant tropical trees or shrubs. There are more than 50 species of mangroves worldwide. Four of these species are found in the United States. One of the best known of these is the Red Mangrove. They're roots prop above ground. Although in the tropics they can grow over 80 feet, rarely do they grow more than 20 feet in the US so they appear more like a shrub. They grow right along the shore.
