Winter weather preparedness

HILL AIR FORCE BASE – Some people welcome winter weather and some would rather not experience it at all. Like it or not, winter is on the way.

Understanding winter weather warnings and making preparations now can be very helpful in having a good winter experience.

A Winter Storm Warning means life-threatening, severe winter condition have begun or will begin within 24 hours.

A Blizzard Warning means sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph, plus considerable falling or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile is expected to prevail for three hours or longer.

Are you ready for these conditions? Is your home ready for these conditions?

Following these tips to help you and your family be safe this winter.
• Drain hose bibs
• Blow out lawn sprinklers
• Turn off outdoor water spigots
• Disconnect garden hoses
• Keep the heat on in your home to at least 55 degrees
• Open cabinet doors during periods of extreme cold
• Replace furnace air filters regularly
• Never use the stove to heat a home
• Test smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) detectors
• Replace detector batteries twice a year
• Know the symptoms of CO poisoning
• Don’t overload electrical circuits
