Danube Ruffe

Gymnocephalus baloni

Description 2

The Danube perch reaches a body length of up to 21 centimeters and has a stocky and hochrückigen body with blunt snout and terminal mouth. It is very similar to the ruffe ( G. cernuus ), from which it is distinguished by a much higher back and a stocky body. The color is grayish to metallic with irregular spots and, in contrast to those of the ruff, always vertically oriented spots. The anterior part of the clearly two-part dorsal fin is bluish with dark spots, the first ray of the anal fin usually ends in a free tip. At the edge of the gill cover are up to 4, but usually 2, spines.
