Zingels have a torpedo-shaped body that appears almost round in cross-section . The mouth of Zingels is inferior, which means that its upper half of the mouth is longer than the mouth half. The scales of the Zingels are small and fixed. Its sides and back have a tan color. His whole body, especially the back, is covered with dark transverse bands. He has two separate dorsal fins ; the first one has 13-14 spines and no soft rays, the second one spines and 18-20 soft rays. The swim bladderis greatly reduced. Zingles grow on average 15 to 20 cm, maximum up to 50 cm in size and reach a weight of about 1.5 kg. The Zingel can easily be confused with the nerd , but has fewer dorsal rays and remains much smaller.
