Description
It is light to pale green in color. The lower stem leaves are round ovate and the upper stem leaves are inverted ovate. The stems are about 2 cm long, have densely arranged leaves. Infertile stems reach a length of 10 cm, and the leaves are sparser and smaller compared to fertile stems. The upper leaves are oblong, ligulate, tapered at the base and serrated. Male and female flowers are on separate plants. It is found in boreal forests in North America, Europe and Asia. It grows on moist but not wet soils with a basic to slightly acidic pH reaction.
