The Christian Doppler Laboratory investigates the complex meta-ecosystem of the Austrian Danube to develop sustainable ecological measures for future management.

The two that you rarely see and the one that stings like a bee. Like the two other species shown, the ruffe (top picture) is a small fish from the perch family. Despite our many electrofishing trips, it has only been found very rarely. With an average size of 10 - 15 cm, this species remains quite small and its hidden way of life means that it is rarely seen. The Danube ruffe (in the middle) also remains very small with a maximum length of 20 cm. The photo shows one of only two specimens recorded this year. Both specimens were caught in the National Park Donauauen along a shallow gravel bank. Very little is known about the way of life of this species. The schraetzer (at the bottom), on the other hand, is often caught when fishing over gravel and sandy habitats. However, you must be careful when handling it - the dorsal fin has spines that can cause painful stings and persistent swelling, as some colleagues have experienced first-hand.
