Biodiversity Freshwater Fish Specialist

Meet Pangio semicincta, commonly known as the Kuhli Loach! As a member of the Cobitidae family, I'm a fascinating creature with an intriguing etymology. My species name "semicincta" derives from Latin, meaning 'half' and 'belt', referring to the distinctive color pattern adorning my body. I reside in the serene forest streams and calm habitats of Peninsular Malaysia and the Great Sunda Islands, including Sumatra and Borneo. You'll often find me basking in the shallow, slow-moving sections of streams or lounging in peaceful swamps and oxbows. With a maximum standard length of 90-100 mm, I may not be the largest fish in the waters, but I bring a unique charm to my surroundings. My ideal habitat boasts clear or tannin-stained water with a pH as low as 3.0 or 4.0, enriched by the gradual release of tannins and organic acids from decaying plant matter. When it comes to dining, I'm a micropredator with a penchant for sifting through substrate for insect larvae and small crustaceans. In captivity, I happily accept sinking dried foods but thrive on a diet of live and frozen delicacies like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. I'm a peaceful companion, getting along swimmingly with other fishes in the tank. You'll often find me in large aggregations, so it's best to keep me in groups of 5-6 specimens to ensure a harmonious environment. While my physical appearance may vary within and between populations, I typically sport a yellowish hue with broad transverse bands across my body. With my distinctive color pattern and peaceful demeanor, I add a touch of elegance to any aquatic setup. #freshwaterfishofborneo #ikanaslikalimantan #marcelalveriadis #pangiosemicincta #freshwaterfishofindonesia
