Nolina nelsonii

Nolina nelsonii

Hello Plant Lovers!

Adaptation is a truly wonderful quality to possess. If you’re a plant, being adaptable gives you an edge over others for sure in terms of survival and future generations. One such plant that has mastered this is Nolina nelsonii. Nolina nelsonii’s natural distribution is very limited, found only in small areas in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Yet, the conditions this plant will grow in once propagated from seed is remarkable. Nolina nelsonii is the largest of the Nolina species reaching up to 20’ tall by 8-10’ wide. This small, multi-headed, treelike species develops a trunk in time that can be 3-12’ topped with a head of stiff, blue-green, sharp-edged leaves 3-4’ long. They resemble a palm in appearance with an added twist being cold hardy to 10°F, can grow in full, hot reflected heat and in part shade, as well as being very drought tolerant. And then there’s the flowers! It’s simply ridiculous how giant the 6-10 FOOT SPIKES covered with small cream-colored flowers rise above the palm-like form in spring!!! Nolina nelsonii only gets better with time, producing more flower spikes each year.

Nolina species in general are fine with many types of soils, as long as they are well drained. They do not like cold/wet feet. Always plant slightly above grade and slope the soil away from the crown. Use Nolina nelsonii where you need some SERIOUS drama, an anchor, statement piece, or work of art. They are very clean, no disease issues and tolerate being in containers. If grown in the ground, a few deep watering’s through the hot summer months is encouraged for best overall health and longevity of the plant.

We now have 24” and 30” box available. Please take a few moments to review the attached photos. I’m positive you’ll be hooked on these like I was from the moment we met. In the plant world, Nolina nelsonii is EPIC!
