Currently, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) recognizes 45 pedigreed cat breeds, compared to the 200 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. With that being said, you'll find no shortage of adorable cat breeds on the CFA's list, including some felines that stay small forever. While cats are typically known for being small in stature, there are some breeds that can get quite big. The Maine Coon, Bengal, and Ragamuffin are just a few of the largest cat breeds. Domestic cats will often vary in size, but some are actually bred to remain small. Some small cat breeds remain around the 5 pound range, compared to the average 9 to 10 pounds of the typical house cat. There are many reasons someone may desire a forever kitten—maybe they're working with limited square footage or they find the sheer cuteness of small cat breeds irresistible. No matter the reason, prospective cat parents should keep in mind that small cat breeds may include a genetic disposition to particular health problems in the future, so it's always a good idea to talk to your veterinarian before adopting a small cat breed. 9 Dog Breeds That Look Like Puppies Even When They're Fully Grown 01 of 09 Singapura Jonathan Galione / GETTY IMAGES The Singapura is one of the smallest cat breeds, weighing between 5 to 8 pounds at grown size, according to the CFA. Its ancestors came from the streets of Singapore and have since been bred to show pure traits of their species, notably the wide eyes, tawny coat, and blunt tail. Their shortened fore and hind legs keep these cats low to the ground, but they're still capable of jumping. It's their soft cream-colored fur and bright blue eyes that attract people to these cats. They are on the small to medium side depending on their gender and weigh in between 5 to 12 pounds, according to TICA. With close-lying silky fur, these tiny cats require very little grooming. These breeds are easy to care for and bond well with their owners, says the CFA. They range from 6 to 9 pounds and come in any color or pattern.
