EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate print showcases the Thornback Skate, Raja clavata, a near-threatened species of rough skate in the family Rajidae. The Thornback Skate, also known as the Common Skate or Rough Skate, is a large, flatfish with a distinctive diamond-shaped body and rough, horny skin. The species is characterized by its large pectoral fins, which it uses to 'fly' through the water by undulating them like wings. The Thornback Skate is found in the North Atlantic and North Sea, preferring deep, cold waters. They are bottom-dwelling fish and feed primarily on crustaceans, mollusks, and other benthic invertebrates. Due to overfishing and bycatch, populations of Thornback Skates have declined significantly in recent decades, making them a species of concern. This beautiful illustration was drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his Natural History of British Fishes, published by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808. Donovan was a renowned Irish naturalist and illustrator, and his work was instrumental in advancing the fields of ichthyology and zoology. This particular print is a testament to Donovan's exceptional skill as an artist and his dedication to documenting the natural world. The Thornback Skate remains an important species in marine and ocean ecosystems, and efforts are being made to protect and conserve its populations. This print serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage and the role that science and art play in understanding and appreciating the wonders of the natural world.
