JimmySalt
Set up my new saltwater tank yesterday, 24 gallon cube. I set it up with Live sand and live rock from my local fish store, I'm wondering does my tank need to cycle if the live rock was from an existing established system? It's quite confusing, this is my first saltwater tank and I don't know if this fully cured live rock from my local fish store. I applied two pictures of my set up. Quote Link to comment
Clown79
If its indeed liverock from an established tank and was not allowed to dry, it may have a small ammonia spike or none at all. Dirty liverock kept in a container will go through a cycle because there is die off from matter that once was alive, like corals. Established liverock should not go through a cycle because it already has and has life on it. The rock you have looks to be walt smith reef rock. That's man made rock. If it was in an established tank it shouldn't need to go through a cycle as it would have already. You don't want to dose ammonia with liverock. The best thing to do is test for a week and see what your results are. Try adding a small amount of food. 1 Quote Link to comment
JimmySalt
It was bagged in water, and when I brought it home, it was out of water for 3 minutes. 1 Quote Link to comment
Donnan
I set up my last two tank with live rock from an established system. I also used a bottle of biospira, not sure if it did anything but I never detected any ammonia. Just don't put a lot of fish in right away. One or two at the most. Also, I used "live sand". 1 Quote Link to comment
