Introduction
Bullmastiff dogs originated from the English Mastiff and Old English Bulldog to be the gamekeepers to guard estates.
They were developed in England in the 1800s.
Bullmastiff dogs are really quiet and seldom bark, they have a mellow personality and love to watch TV with you on the couch.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Bullmastiffs in 1934.
These medium energy dogs are known as brave, loyal, a little aggressive yet mellow at the same time.
They have to live indoors with you but okay if you leave them for work, they will smartly adapt to your lifestyle.
Bullmastiffs require much of your attention but they give you lots of love in return.
They are okay with children (better with older ones), but your supervision is needed since they might unintentionally hurt them.
Bullmastiffs can be aggressive to someone they don’t know or when they encounter new situations.
This dog breed is now ranked by AKC as the 48th most popular dog breed among more than 155 others.
Appearance
Bullmastiff dogs have a soft, dense, and short coat which makes them resistant to snow, cold, or rain. They are prone to heat exhaustion.
Strong bones support their powerful body. Bullmastiffs can weigh between 100 to 130 pounds with a 24 to 27 inches standing height, with females being smaller than males.
There are 6 colors recognized as the standard by AKC. These are fawn, fawn brindle, red, red brindle, red fawn, and red fawn brindle. There are 4 markings: black mask, black markings, black mask white markings, and fawn mask are recognized but only the first one is standard.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
This dog breed doesn’t shed much and is easily groomed. Daily brushing using rubber grooming mitts is enough to keep their coat clean and shiny which makes them look their best.
Bathing is only needed when you think they are dirty, they may spend much time indoor so once every six to eight weeks is a necessity.
Other grooming tasks such as teeth brushing, ear checking, and nail trimming are just the same with other usual dog breeds. Occasional to maintain good oral hygiene.
Exercise
They need daily exercise of about 30 minutes, so a short walk every morning or afternoon is sufficient.
Make sure you socialize them with other dogs and people under your supervision to prevent aggressiveness when they encounter new situations.
Training by professionals is good for them since they need a special approaching method to be trained.
