Description

This interdisciplinary lesson connects art and science while teaching students about the Toco Toucan. The lesson begins with full color images of Toco Toucans and thorough information about the birds including physical charecteristics of the birds, the environment they live in and what they eat in the rainforests of South America. Next, students are given step-by-step drawing instructions on how to draw a realistic Toco Toucan and a background that depicts the environment in which it lives. Students are then given a detailed, step-by-step demonstration on how to "burnish" - a technique of blending colors of oil pastels together to create a smooth, shiny effect that creates a look similar to something that has been painted!
Everything that you need is included in this lesson including end of unit assessment questions and group critique questions. Also included at the end of the power point presentation are finished student examples and notes to the teacher offering suggestions for how to implement the lesson day by day.
