Hornleaf

Hornleaf (Ceratophyllum demersum ) is a dark green aquatic plant in the Hornleaf family often found in various waters. This plant, with its floating nature, can reach a length of 60 to 90 cm. A striking feature of the hornleaf are the side stems that sprout from the main stem, from which wreath-shaped, forked leaves grow. These threadlike, line-shaped leaves are rather stiff, and their forks have sharply serrated edges.

What makes the flowering process of this plant unique is that within the same plant, in the leaf axils, both male and female flowers can occur. The flowers are characterized by a 10- to 12-slip flower cover. Within this flower cover are about 20 stamens with short anthers in the male flowers, or an erect ovary with a style and stigma in the female flowers. The process of fertilization takes place under water, with pollen reaching the stigmas through the water. From this fertilization arises achenes with characteristic thorns.

The spread of hornwort in different waters can occur in a variety of ways. Wave action can cause pieces of the plant to break off and end up elsewhere, and waterfowl can also contribute to the spread by carrying pieces of the plant on their legs.

A special characteristic of hornwort is that it prepares itself in winter for the colder months. The plants form densely foliated shoots that sink to the bottom to overwinter. When spring arrives again, these sprouts grow into new, full-sized plants. As a result, we are dealing with a long-lived, perennial plant species.
