High levels of amino acids including polyphenols and oligosaccharides that can be found in green gram, are the main contributors to their antioxidant power, which can help in fighting cancer. In clinical studies, green gram were reported to have anti-tumor activity and are able to protect dangerous cell mutation and DNA damage.

A 2012 study conducted by the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering, at the China Agricultural University, reported that green grams’ antioxidant capacities are mainly derived from isovitexin and vitexin.

These are 2 types of protective flavonoids that contain high free-radical scavenging abilities. These flavanoids lower oxidative stress, which can contribute to cancer formation.
