The construction of a medieval castle

  • Motte: The mound of earth on which the castle was built.
  • Moat: A ditch surrounding the castle. It may have been filled with water, which was an extra challenge for attackers to overcome.
  • Gatehouse: The main entrance to the castle. It may have had a drawbridge over the moat, and a portcullis to block the gateway.
  • Bailey: The courtyard inside the walls of the castle.
  • Keep: The biggest and strongest tower in the castle.
