They can weigh up to 200lbs and are apparently extremely aggressive. Used as guard dogs in Russian military bases, used to fight wolves and bears...

Anyone own one or have experience dealing with this monster of a dog? I find the breed fascinating if very intimidating.

I have a two and a half year old ovcharka and I have never been so challenged with raising a critter in my life.

Elaborate! I wonder what it's like to train one.

My biggest issue I had was I didn't anticipate how mean they are when they are very young. I got mine at 8 weeks, 22 pounds and he looked adorable but he would change in an instant when the situation arose. As soon he felt bullied or wanted to protect what he thought belonged to him he would go berserk and have a go at anything near his face. He grew out of it for a bit around when he was 4-5 months old but then the attitude came back right around at 6 months. After that I decided that my dog and I needed professional training and did that for the next 6 months everyday

How is he now that he's trained?

That dog in the first pic. If I saw that coming at me, I'd scream like a little girl. And they're used to fight bears?

)8 that thing is adorably terrifying. Do you have pics of your psycho puppy? *curious*

Hopefully I got these links all right. Apologies in advance if I didn't get them right the first try.

After his training the big thing is he is fairly predictable now, and more than anything I just want to keep people safe from him and him safe from people.

That last pic, "I dare you, mother fucker."

Damn, that's a big dog. And I used to have a Newfoundland. He was 165.

He did not have a mean bone in his body though. (As a general rule, Newfoundlands don't.) OTOH, if he didn't want to go anywhere, he didn't go. He just dug in and would be immobile.

I can't imagine how these are controllable. I was a reasonably fit 180 lb 6' man, and my Newfoundland was stronger than me.

Then again, I'm not sure that extra 35 pounds is muscle. They look kind of fat...

I visited an aunt in Scotland a couple years back and they were having some guests over who brought 2 New Foundlands. Big dogs at least 140lbs each. And yet my aunt's like 30 lb beagle owned the yard. Both New foundlands were huge softies who rolled over once the beagle started barking at them.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
The biggest dog I ever had was an Irish Wolfhound/Mastiff mix. That's the tallest dog breed mixed with one of the heaviest. Even then, she topped out at about 180, so 200 is pretty bananas.

She was very territorial/protective, but I wouldn't say *aggressive*. If you came to the house and she didn't know you then you had to watch your shit, but she wasn't going to run around town fucking shit up.

Why would you buy a dog like this knowing it is so aggressive?

The breeder I got him from breeds them particularly aggressive and I honestly didn't do my research very well... at all. I love him, but I wouldn't choose this breed if I could go back in time to pick again.

I have always liked large dogs and have owned an English mastiff previously. Figured I was ready for a more challenging dog but the difference is just massive. My ovcharka doesn't even seem domesticated in comparison.

Do you live near other people? It's good to hear that you respect it's power and aggression, But it still seems awfully dangerous to have in a normal setting. .

I have 30 acres and the few neighbors around have more land to look after than I do.
